These factors include:
- Car battery capacity: The capacity of a car battery is usually measured in Ampere-hours(Ah). Basically, this is the total amount of energy that the battery can store. Usually, the larger the capacity of the battery, the longer it will take to charge to n the fullest.
- Amperage of the charger: Here, we have to consider the capacity of the charger that we are using to charge the car battery. The amperage is usually measured in Amps and determines the rate at which it will discharge the amps. The higher the amperage, the shorter the charging time.
- Battery voltage: Well , most car batteries are rated at 12 volts. This is the potential difference of the car battery.
- State of the charge: This is a key factor that will determine the charging time. Are you getting the battery from 0% to full ? In our case, the car battery is at 2 amps.
After listing the above key determinants for the charging time, we will then do some calculations.
To find the charging time, we will have divide the battery capacity by the amperage of the charger.
Assuming that the car battery is rated at 12V and 50 Ah, we will go ahead to divide the 50ah/2A.
This ends up giving us 24 hours.
And that is how we have concluded that it will take an average of 24 hours to charge the battery.
If you use different chargers such as 10 amps and 20 hours, it is clear that you will get different numbers.
Dangers of using a large charger?
Other than the 2 amps, charger, we have listed other charging options such as 10amp, 20amp and 40amps.
It is always not advisable to charger using a charger rated more than 10amps. Here are some of the common risks:
-Risk of overcharging: A larger charger is designed to deliver large amounts of current within a short time. This will cause overcharging and eventually damage the battery. Overcharging can also lead to voltage spikes hence damaging the key components of the battery
-Reduce the battery life: Constantly using a large time will eventually reduce the lifespan of the battery.
-Generation of gas: Most chargers beyond 10 amps tend to generate gas in the battery during the charging process. This increases the risk of fire and even explosion.
-Inhibit the battery efficiency: Constantly using a fast charger will eventually affect the charging efficiency of a battery. By this I mean that it will be difficult to get your battery charge to the fullest whenever you use other batteries, or even when charging in car.
