The LMZM33606RLXR power module is a low-profile package that integrates a 6-A DC/DC converter with power MOSFETs, a shielded inductor, and passives for an intuitively integrated power solution. The loop compensation and inductor part selection are unnecessary for this power solution, which reduces the number of required external components to only four.

The 41-pin, 16 mm by 10 mm by 4 mm, QFN packaging is simple to solder into a printed circuit board and enables low-profile, compact point-of-load designs. Power good, a programmable UVLO, previous start-up, selectable auto or FPWM modes, and over-current and over-temperature protection are among the features offered by the LMZM33606. Detailed Description

The LMZM33606RLXR  is a fully functional, low-profile, overmolded 36-V input, 6-A, synchronous step-down converter with an integrated controller, MOSFETs, shielding inductor, and control circuits. The device integration makes small designs possible, making it possible to modify important parameters to satisfy particular design requirements.

The output voltage range of the LMZM33606 is 1 V to 20 V. The output voltage is changed to the desired value using a resistor divider external to the device. The LMZM33606 can additionally vary the switching frequency, either using an external resistor or a sync signal, enabling it to operate efficiently under various input and output voltage situations. The device delivers precise voltage regulation over a broad load range by utilizing a precise internal voltage reference. The EN pin can be pushed low to lower the quiescent input current and put the device into standby mode.

Feature Description

● Input Capacitor Selection

A minimum of 20 F of input capacitance of the ceramic type is required by the LMZM33606. Use only X5R or X7R ceramic capacitors with an appropriate voltage rating of the highest quality. TI suggests an extra 33 F of non-ceramic capacitance for applications requiring transient load requirements. The maximum input voltage must be higher than the voltage rating of the input capacitors. TI suggests using numerous capacitors in parallel or a voltage rating twice the maximum input voltage to account for ceramic capacitors’ derating. The input capacitors’ worst-case total ripple current rating must be at least 3 ARMS when operating at 50% duty cycle and maximum load.

● Feed-Forward Capacitor

For stability across the device’s operating range, the LMZM33606 has inbuilt compensation. However, for best performance, a feed-forward capacitor, or CFF, may be added, depending on the output voltage and amount of output capacitance.

● Switching Frequency (RT)

350 kHz to 1.2 MHz is the LMZM33606RLXR’s suggested switching frequency range. Higher switching frequencies (up to 2.2 MHz) are possible for the device under particular conditions, although doing so will compromise its efficiency and thermal performance. Putting a resistor (RRT) between the RT pin and AGND makes it simple to adjust the switching frequency. The RT pin can also be left floating, and the default switching frequency for the LMZM33606 is 500 kHz.

● Synchronization (SYNC/MODE)

Additionally, the synchronization range for the LMZM33606 switching frequency is 350 kHz to 2.2 MHz. The device switches at the frequency set by the RRT resistor before the external clock is present. To configure the frequency to match the external synchronization frequency, choose RRT.

The gadget switches to SYNC mode and overrides RT mode within 1 ms (typically) of the external clock becoming active. The device switches at the SYNC frequency for 10 s (typ) without the external clock, then switch back to the switching frequency determined by the RT resistor with little effect on the output voltage. The external clock should have a duty cycle between 10% and 90%, a high level no lower than 2 V, a low level no greater than 0.4 V, and positive and negative pulse widths no less than 80 ns.

The device’s operating mode while synchronizing to an external clock is FPWM. To switch between Auto mode and FPWM mode when synchronization is not required, connect this pin to AGND or logic high. Never leave this pin exposed. The output voltages of the devices to be synchronized must be considered while choosing the synchronization frequency.

● Overcurrent Protection (OCP)

The LMZM33606RLXR  is safeguarded from overcurrent circumstances. To avoid overheating, hiccup mode is initiated if a fault state continues. When operating in hiccup mode, the regulator is turned off and maintained off for 10 milliseconds (typically) until the LMZM33606 tries to restart. Hiccup cycles until the overcurrent or short-circuit fault state is resolved. Under extreme overcurrent conditions, hiccup mode decreases power dissipation, guards against overheating, and guards against potential device damage. The module automatically recovers and resumes regular functioning once the fault has been fixed.

● Thermal Shutdown

If the junction temperature rises over 160°C, the inbuilt thermal shutdown circuitry causes the device to stop switching (typical). When the junction temperature falls below 135°C, the device restarts the power-up sequence (typical).


The operating voltage range for the LMZM33606 is between 3.5 V and 36 V. This input supply needs to sustain a consistent voltage and the maximum input current. The input supply rail’s resistance needs to be low enough so that an input current transient won’t result in a significant enough reduction in LMZM33606 supply voltage to necessitate a turn-off and system reset. In addition to the ceramic bypass capacitors, more bulk capacitance may be needed if the input supply is placed further away from the LMZM33606 than a few inches. A 100-F electrolytic capacitor serves as a good example of normal bulk capacitance.
