When it comes to serial communication, usually, the attention is on data transmission.
How is data transmitted from one device to another?
And which form of data transmission is the best?
Here is where the argument of RS232 vs DB9 comes in.
Both are communication standards used for data transfer.
The main difference between them is the type of connectors used.
Of course, there are other differences that we are going to discuss in this article.
And at the end of it all, we will guide you on which one to choose between RS232 and DB9.
Including choosing the best manufacturer and supplier.
What is RS232?
First, ‘RS’ stands for the recommended standard. It describes the communication standard used by the DTE and DCE signals.
RS232 is an older serial communication standard that is mainly used by various devices such as computers, routers ad even modems.
It makes it possible for data transfer between computers and peripheral devices, without excluding one computer from another.
In other words, the DTE and DCE devices whereby DTE refers to the computers while DCE refers to the modems.
A computer will transfer data serially to another peripheral equipment such as a modem (DCE)
This data is usually transmitted n the form of binary (os and 1s).
Furthermore, RS232 describes the voltage levels, operation mode, and electrical standards that are used in the data transfer between these two parties (DTE and DCE).
RS232 working principle
The RS232 working principle is defined by a well-elaborated protocol style.
The standard features a point-to-point communication protocol that sends data to one direction.
The data transmission is designed in such a way that there is no clock to synchronize communication between the transmitter and the receiver.
The data to be transmitted is initiated by the start bit and followed by the 7-bit binary data, then a stop bit. These bits are sent one after another.
Figuratively, its starts with ‘0’ and is followed by the 7 bits ASCII.
Despite the unavailability of a data clock to synchronize, the data between the transmitter and receiver should always match.
As we have already mentioned, the transmission at the end is halted by the stop bit, which is usually represented by the binary ‘1’.In most cases 1 and 2-stop bits can be used for halting the data.
During the transmission process, there should be some level of delay between each bit. This delay is known as ‘inactive time’ and it creates time for data synchronization.
What is DB9?

DB9, which is commonly referred to as D-sub 9 is kind of the newer serial communication standard used for connecting computers and peripheral devices.
It makes it possible for a computer to communicate with the peripheral devices or with other computers.
The DB-9 connectors have 9 pins which are male connectors and 9 holes, which are female connectors.
How does DB9 work?
The working principle of this connector is based on the fact that it has 9 pins that create connections between different devices.
Each pin has a specific function or role that it plays when it comes to creating the connection. They are arranged in two rows left and right.
For example, pin one is for data detection while Pin two is for data reception. Functions such as data filtering, synchronization, and call indication are performed by other pins.
DB9 connector also features molded hoods that enhance the connections between the computer and peripheral devices.
The connector is designed in a way that it is possible to reverse the use of male and female pins with their connectives.
Advantages and Disadvantages of RS232
Let’s compare the pros and cons of the RS232
Advantages
-RS232 is known for its simplicity hence easy to deal with. You can easily connect with other devices.
-Supports a wide range of legacy devices as it is widely accepted in the market. Can be used for different DTE and DCE electrical devices
-Supports long distances. It can connect devices that are up to 50 meters apart without any data interference.
-Quite affordable hence suitable whenever you are looking for low-cost connectors.
-High immunity to noise. This is possible mainly because of 5-volts binary logic.
-Compatible with most converters and adapters.
RS232 Disadvantages
-Although it supports long distances, the speed may be limited for such applications
-The connector requires separate transceiver chips that may be quite expensive
-The transmission is not well-balanced.
-Only suitable for system-to-system communication. Cannot be used on devices that require chip-to-chip communication
Advantages and Disadvantages of DB9
Advantages
Here are the pros and cons of the DB9 connector:
-Can be easily customized: Here, you only need to work with each pin to meet the specific needs of data transmission.
-Supports significantly long distances without affecting the speed of the transmission.
-Supports several options of conversion in order to meet the needs of different devices
Disadvantages
-Difficult to connect and disconnect in small spaces
-Prone to physical damages since the pins are well exposed. The good news is there are different pieces of hardware that can be designed to offer adequate protection.
-Quite slow when long distances data transmission is involved. In fact, it is slower than the RS232 standard.
Which one to choose Between DB9 and RS232
From the features, specs, pros, and cons, which one should you choose between these two connection standards?
As we have seen, RS232 defines the communication standard while DB9 defines the physical connection.
RS232 encompasses attributes like duration and voltage while DB9 defines the nine-pin connectors.
The choice of the connection standard will depend on the specific requirements of your applications.
While RS232 is the oldest, it still remains the most common type of connection. On the other hand, DB9 supports fast speed.
Also, check and verify the specs of your device before choosing its connector.
With the right choice of connection standard, you should be able to use your device without any problem.
Whichever connection you choose, ensure that it is from the right supplier.
We at ICRFQ will ensure that you get the right connection modules in China.
