There are a lot of misconceptions about these three types of electrical lines. Chances are you might have been lured or deluded by some of these misconceptions.
Don’t worry, we are here to demystify some of those myths. so we’re going to break down what each one does for you and when you should use them.

What is a live wire?
A live wire is a wire that carries current. Most of us identify live wires by their colors-red. We tend to assume that the red color signifies danger that is associated with a live wire since it carries current.
To some extent, this may be true.It is not always a red wire, but can be any color.
When connected to an electrical device (e.g. a light switch), it sends current through the device by way of the switch and into the circuit.
If you have ever plugged in an appliance or turned on an electrical switch and nothing happened, then you have probably encountered a live wire without realizing it.
What is a neutral wire?
A neutral is a wire that carries no current; it’s like the ground in most electronics circuits. It’s used to “ground” devices to prevent them from receiving any power through wires that have high voltage running through them and causing damage to their internal parts (such as frying your electronics).
The purpose of the neutral is to keep devices from being damaged by stray signals or currents that may come from other wires in your home’s wiring system.
What is an earth wire?
Other than the live and neutral, this is another type of wire that you should know-earth wire.
The purpose of the earth wire is to ground your electrical device to the grounding system in your home.

Here are some ways to identify these wires.
Color codes
When you open up your electric circuit, you will realize that the wires have different colors. Do you think that all those colors are for cosmetic purposes? I hope no. They are used for representing different wires.
You can identify live, neutral and ground wires using their color codes. Most live wires are identified by their red colors.
The same goes for the neutral wires, which are identified by their green colors.
The earth wire is identified by its dark brown color.
To identify your home’s grounding system, you should know what the different colors mean:
Grounding wire is brown and white-this wire is used to connect electrical devices and appliances to your home’s grounding system.
Stamped number code
Second, you can look for a stamped number on the wire.
This is a way of identifying a wire that has been installed by an electrician or an electrician’s assistant.
You can use this code to identify which wire is live, neutral and earth.

Here are the steps to follow when using a multimeter to identify wires:
Step 1: Get the necessary tools. These include a multimeter, a wire stripper and a pair of pliers.
Step 2: Identify the voltage that is being supplied to the circuit. If you are connecting a lamp to the circuit, then you will need to know how much voltage is being supplied.
Step 3: Bring all the three wires that are supplying to the circuit, then set the multimeter to the highest voltage reading.
Step 4: Connect the black probe on the multimeter to the ground wire. Alternatively, you can connect to any grounded object. This can be piped or faucet. If the multimeter records the readings, this would mean that the wire is ground.
Step 5: Now lets go ahead and test the next cable. Connect the red probe of your multimeter to an exposed wire that is going to the circuit. Does it record any readings? If not, then the wire is neutral. As we have said, neutral wires don’t have electric potential and that is why the multimeter wont tilt. However, if it records, then this could mean that it is a live wire.
However, you should be very careful when using a multimeter to identify the wires. Do not connect it to any other wires that you don’t need to. Always use caution and always test the circuit first before you connect the multimeter.

Is neutral wire and earth wire the same?
No, these wires are different in that earth wire carries a negative charge whereas neutral wire carries a zero or no charge.
The earth wire is used to ground the circuit. It has to be connected to a grounded object like the floor or the ground plate of an electrical outlet. If this is not connected, then the circuit will be shorted out.
The neutral wires are used to carry electric potential and current in a circuit. It is important as it completes all the electrical components in a circuit and ensures that they work properly together. Without it, you would have faulty electrical components and faulty circuits which will not function properly.
What happens if I mix up live and neutral wires?
If you mix up the live and neutral wires, then it can cause a short circuit which will damage both the wires. It is very dangerous and you should never do this.
How do I connect a multimeter when testing wires?
As we have said, one method of identifying the wires is with the use of a multimeter.
It is easy to connect a multimeter to the wire and to the circuit. You can either connect it to the test lead or the probe. The test lead is usually the white plastic wire that connects to the circuit. The other end of this wire will have the black probe that you need to insert into the circuit.
If you are using a digital multimeter, then there will be a switch on it that will allow you to choose between volts and amperes. If you are using a hand-held multimeter, then there will be two terminals for voltage and current and you need to connect these in order to measure electrical current.
Make sure both terminals are connected before connecting your probes into the wires.

Can we use earth wire as neutral wire
No, you cannot use earth wire as a neutral wire. The earth wire is for grounding and to protect the house from electrical shocks. You can only use an earth wire as a neutral in an island installation.
Can we use the same wires for all circuits?
No, you can not use the same wires for all circuits. You need to make sure that the circuits are separated into different sections so that you will not be exposed to electricity from one circuit to another circuit through another wire or through the ground at some place.
All of these things can cause more problems than they solve and have more risks than benefits attached to them.
What is a ground fault?
A ground fault is a problem that occurs when a device receives too much power through its own ground wire.
This can cause damage to internal parts of the device and can result in fire or other electrical hazards.
To prevent this, the ground wire is used as a conductor (like other wires) so that if there is too much current running through it, then it will stop conducting electricity and instead allow electricity to flow through it normally.

Application area
Start by asking yourself;where am I going to use the wire? Is it on a small device or for wiring a building?
If you are going to use the wire for small devices, then it doesn’t really matter whether you install the wires in a single run or multiple runs. It is best to install them in single runs because it is convenient and also costs less.
On the other hand, if you are installing the wires for wiring a building, then you need to make sure that they are installed in a single run as well.
Cable diameter
The cable diameter mainly depends on the application area of your wires and also on how many wires you want to install at one time. For example, if you want to use flexible cables, then it is best to use cables that are at least 0.75mm in diameter.
If you want to use cables that are thicker, then you need to make sure that they are larger than 0.75mm in diameter. Also, if you want to install multiple wires at a single time, then it is best for you to buy cables with a diameter of between 0.3mm and 0.5mm.
Insulation
All wires for electrical purposes have insulation, whether it is live wire, neutral or ground. All wires also have a type of insulation, which is used to protect the wire from physical damage. The most common types of insulation are braided and solid.
The type of insulation that you need depends on the application area of your wires and also on how many wires you want to install at one time.
