Use of diodes in logic switch
This is one of the most common uses of diodes in switching circuits. They are used in the implementation of logic functions such as AND, OR, and NOT. There are specialized diode logic gates that are used for controlling and determining all these logical operations.
To function as switches, diodes are usually used with transistors to form a diode-transistor logic (DTL). When used in switches, these logic gates can be used to implement all the logic operations. Several diodes and transistors are connected in series. This connection allows the flow of signals from one end to the circuit to another. The inputs into the circuit can either be “high” or “low”. The output will depend on whether the logic gate is AND, and OR.

Diodes as analog switches

Here the operation will depend on the biasing of the diode. A major challenge when using a diode switch is the conversion of power from AC to DC signals. In most cases, rectifier diodes are included in the circuits to implement speedy power conversion.
Types of switching diodes
There are different types of diodes that are used in switching circuits. They include the following:
- Ordinary switching diodes: Thee are the general-purpose diodes that are also used in many other electronic applications. They have average speeds and deliver average switching performance.
- High-speed switching diodes: These are specialized diodes that are designed to support fast switching speeds. They have a shorter recovery time than the general diodes meaning that they can switch the states from On to Off within a short time.
- Ultra-high speed switching diode: Well, as the name suggests, they provide support for extra speed and high frequency.
- Low power switching diodes: These diodes are rated based on their power consumption. They consume significantly lower power when integrated in the circuits than most diodes. Despite their low power consumption, they can still achieve high switching speeds.
- Silicon voltage switching diodes: These are the latest developments in semiconductor technology. They can function as ordinary unidirectional switching diodes and at the same time can work as bidirectional diodes. They are commonly used in logic gates and as well as in pulse generators.
