Sustainability is quite a major topic in the manufacturing industry. The printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) has not been left behind by this topic that aims to ensure that there is minimal environmental degradation due to manufacturing activities. Most activities in the PCBA entail assembling different electronic components onto the circuit board so that they end up making a single module.
A PCB manufacturer gathers or collects electronic components from various sources, verifies them, conducts system validations then solders the components on the printed circuit board. In as much as the process seems to be simple, there are lots of activities that take place and can directly lead to serious environmental degradation. In this article, we are going to discuss various methods of implementing sustainable practices during PCBA manufacturing.
Restriction of toxic substances in PCBA manufacturing
Proper implementation of sustainability in PCBA manufacturing starts with the selection of the components and substances that make up these components. Some substances found in the components that make up PCB modules tend to be hazardous the chemicals can release toxic fumes when they are used in their respective application area.
The good news is various regulatory bodies have enacted laws that regulate the use of certain substances in PCBA manufacturing. Sustainable PCBA manufacturing should be in compliance with the registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). Additionally, these manufacturing processes should fully comply with the directives set by REACH (Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS).
Through such standards, PCBA manufacturers are striving to avoid using toxic chemicals or reduce their usage. Some of the hazardous substances being avoided include lead, mercury, biphenyls, and some types of chromium, among many other chemicals. Hazardous materials and chemicals are replaced with bio-friendly components.
Sustainable design
Design is part of the PCBA manufacturing process. It has a direct impact on the sustainability of the production process and also of the product. By implementing agile or optimized design, you will be able to enhance sustainability by a serious margin. How is this achieved?
First, an optimized PCB design may translate to less surface area for the PCB module. Less material will be used for holding the components and this means that fewer resources will be used for producing the modules.
Optimized design also focuses on the dissipation of energy from a module. There will be minimal wastage of electric energy from the PCB in the form of heat or noise. Minimum wastage of power has a positive impact on the environment.
By increasing the component density, optimized design also increases the performance of the PCB. It may end up eliminating the need for several PCB modules in a device hence encouraging sustainability.
Reduce wastage during PCB manufacturing
Waste reduction is an integral component of sustainability. It aims at cutting down the materials and components that are used in the production of PCB modules. The waste comes in different forms. We have solid waste, fluids, and even toxic fumes.
Modern PCBA manufacturing entails the use of precise techniques that ensure there is minimal solid waste. 3D printing, which is also known as inkjet printing is one of these techniques. Additionally, there is a widespread use of recyclable materials for the PCB modules. They can be recycled and reused instead of being dumped to form solid waste.
Transparent supply chain
Sustainability in the PCBA manufacturing process is extended to the supply and distribution of these modules. While the manufacturer might have implemented all the required practices and procedures, some suppliers may introduce malpractices that would end up interfering with the sustainability of the PCB modules.
Transparent supply and distribution systems are usually introduced to ensure that manufacturers can easily monitor the movement of their products. They can see how each module is handled and the additional manufacturing procedures that are implemented in the supply chain.
Energy efficiency in PCB manufacturing
Sustainability starts with the production of PCBA manufacturing. One way of achieving sustainability is by improving energy efficiency during the manufacturing process. PCBA manufacturers are shifting to renewable sources of energy such as solar, and wind power. This way, they are reducing their reliance on fossil fuels which are known for causing environmental degradation.
Apart from using better alternative sources of energy, manufacturers are also minimizing the wastage of energy even when using fossil fuels. Optimized production procedures also help to save energy hence improving sustainability in PCBA manufacturing.
Manufacturing reliable and durable PCBA
How do I minimize waste from printed circuit boards? One of the most effective ways is by manufacturing reliable and durable PCBA. With reliable PCBA modules, it means that there will be minimal breakdowns or damages. This means that there will be minimal accumulation of solid waste from the modules. Manufacturing durable PCBs, it means that the PCBs will have a long lifespan hence less wastage.
How do I extend the lifespan of PCB? The most basic way is to use quality materials to manufacture the modules. The materials should be able to withstand harsh conditions for extended durations without getting damaged.
Conclusion
In this day and age, it is increasingly becoming impossible to ignore the message of sustainability in the printed circuit board assembly. The world is already suffering from the consequences of climate change. No matter how small or minor the practice may be, it will have a major impact on enhancing sustainability.
Other than improving the environment, sustainability has a direct impact on the users and the brand that specializes in PCBA manufacturing. Buyers always tend to align themselves with brands that are known for promoting sustainability in their manufacturing processes.
Other than manufacturers, other players in the industry are also implementing sustainability practices. For example, PCB suppliers and distributors are embracing various practices that enhance sustainability in the supply chain of these modules. Consumers of PCB, who are mainly electronic appliance manufacturers are also doing something especially when it comes to the safe disposal of the damaged PCB modules. With time, the whole ecosystem will run smoothly without having any serious impact on the environment.
